The Complete School Uniform Care Guide:
Fabrics, Embroidery & Printed Items
School uniforms work hard — from the classroom to the playground, they’re worn almost every day. And because parents often need them to last the whole school year (sometimes longer, if handed down), proper care makes a big difference. The right washing, drying and ironing routine not only keeps uniforms looking smart, but also extends the life of fabrics, embroidery and printed designs.
At Hamiltons, we’ve been supplying and customising uniforms for decades. In this guide, we’ll share expert tips on how to look after schoolwear made from different fabrics, how to protect embroidered logos and badges, and how to keep printed designs fresh without cracking or fading.

General Washing Tips for All School Uniforms
Always check the label: care labels give specific instructions for each garment.
Wash inside out: reduces friction and protects embroidery, logos and colour.
Wash cool (30–40°C): prevents shrinkage, fading and thread damage.
Use mild detergent: eco or non-bio detergents are gentle on fibres and children’s skin.
Pre-treat stains: collars, cuffs and knees are common trouble spots. Apply stain remover directly before washing.
Avoid fabric conditioner: it can interfere with easy-care coatings on many uniform fabrics.
Caring for Different Uniform Fabrics
Cotton
Strong, breathable and comfortable.
Wash at 30–40°C to protect fibres.
Expect some natural shrinkage over time.
Iron on medium heat; steam helps remove wrinkles.
Store folded or hung to avoid stretching.
Polyester & Blends
Common in polo shirts, trousers and skirts.
Durable, wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying.
Wash cool and avoid high heat in tumble dryers.
Polyester can be damaged by bleach — use mild stain removers instead.
Iron on low heat; too hot and fibres may melt or shine.
Wool or Wool Blends (blazers, knitwear)
Gentle wash or dry clean only (check label).
Hand wash in cold water with wool-safe detergent if machine washing isn’t allowed.
Lay flat to dry to prevent stretching.
Store on padded hangers or folded to maintain shape.
Fleece
Wash inside out at 30°C.
Avoid fabric conditioner (can flatten fibres).
Air dry — tumble drying can cause piling.
Brush lightly with a fabric brush to restore softness.
How to Care for Embroidered Uniforms
Embroidery is long-lasting, but it needs a little extra care:
Turn garments inside out before washing to protect threads.
Avoid harsh chemicals (bleach) that can fade colours.
Iron from the reverse side with a cloth over embroidery to prevent melting or flattening.
Store embroidered items hung up — folded crests may crease or warp.
How to Care for Printed Uniforms
Printed designs (vinyl, screen print, DTG) are more sensitive than embroidery:
Always wash inside out.
Wash at 30°C with mild detergent.
Do not tumble dry — heat can cause peeling or cracking.
Avoid ironing directly over prints; place a pressing cloth on top if needed.
Hang to dry to prevent the print sticking to itself.

Drying & Ironing Best Practices
Air dry whenever possible: it reduces wear and tear and saves energy.
If using a tumble dryer: choose low heat and remove garments slightly damp to avoid wrinkles.
Iron on low/medium heat: protect delicate fabrics with a pressing cloth.
Iron slightly damp items: makes it easier to remove creases.
Storage & Maintenance
Hang blazers, jumpers and polos to avoid creases.
Fold trousers, skirts and PE kits neatly.
Store in a cool, dry place.
Check regularly for loose buttons, frayed hems or small tears.
Make repairs promptly to avoid replacing whole items.
Use garment bags for items not worn every day.
